My name is Judy Lewis and for many years I’ve spoken with groups around the state,
providing information and materials to create a safe space. Initially the focus of my work
was directed at LGBT youth, but in 2010, as the executive director of a small, faith
based non-profit, I was approached by three women and asked to consider including
older adults in my work. As an older adult myself, and after hearing their concerns, I
agreed to apply for a grant and I put together some informational programs. My
proposal was accepted – and I thought it would be a simple matter to find professional
speakers who could provide information and resources for LGBT older adults.
But, to my shock and disappointment, that was not the case.
With a great deal of networking, I was able to find speakers for the programs I had
envisioned – but I learned that there were no protections for LGBT Older Adults in
employment, housing, or public accommodations. And that LGBT Older Adults were too
often asked to leave doctors’ offices, restaurants, vacation accommodations – and had
no legal recourse.
With the help of two colleagues, and the support of several organizations, I founded the
LGBT Older Adult Coalition and have been providing information and resources for
many years, specifically focused on Older Adults, speaking at conferences, universities,
medical institutions –as well as businesses and organizations throughout the state who
engage with Older Adults.
Although much has changed in the last few years, LGBT Older Adults grew up in a very
different time and culture, and many have experienced continual stress and trauma.
Rather than living a life of authenticity during their final chapter, many have now
retreated into a “safe place” where they feel they won’t be subject to abuse or neglect.
It’s important that we help.
I would love to speak with you and your staff about bringing cultural humility and a
greater understanding to the services you provide. The workshops run between 90
minutes and two hours, with stories and activities designed to inform and connect, and
your professional needs in mind. And I am told that they have saved lives.
Please contact me via phone or email if you have questions. I’ll look forward to working
together.
All the best!
