Our History

My name is Judy Lewis and for over three decades I’ve spoken with groups around the state, and in
the Midwest, providing information and materials to create a safe space for marginalized populations.
And I’ve learned LGBT Older Adults are too often asked to leave doctors’ offices, restaurants,
vacation accommodations – and, until recently, with no legal recourse.

With the help of two colleagues, and the support of several organizations, I founded the LGBT Older
Adult Coalition, the first and only organization in Michigan serving LGBT Older Adults, their families
and friends, providing information and resources for creating safe space.

Our Focus

For many years I have specifically focused on Older Adults. I have spoken at conferences,
universities, medical institutions –as well as businesses and organizations throughout the Midwest
who engage with Older Adults.

I will work with your organization to offer one hour, two hour, and three hour workshops that address
your organization’s needs, and provide materials and tools for creating a more inclusive culture in
your institution.

Moving Forward

Although much has changed in the last few years, LGBT Older Adults grew up in a very different time
and culture, and many have experienced continual stress and trauma. Rather than living a life of
authenticity during their final chapter, many have now retreated into a “safe place” where they feel
they won’t be subject to abuse or neglect.
